Økokrim has now opened an investigation into former Prime Minister, Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee and Secretary General of the Council of Europe Thorbjørn Jagland on suspicion of aggravated corruption.

- We consider there are reasonable grounds for investigation, given that he held the positions of chair of the Nobel Committee and Secretary General of the Council of Europe during the period covered by the released documents, says Pål K. Lønseth, Director of Økokrim.

Among other things, Økokrim will investigate whether gifts, travel and loans were received in connection with his position.

Process for waiving immunity
Since Jagland has immunity as a former head of an international organization, Økokrim has asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to take the initiative to lift his immunity.
Økokrim continues to look into on the material in the Epstein files.

- Regarding other parts of the material, we will revert to that at a later stage. As the material is extensive the assessment will take some time, says Lønseth.
